Ulverstone is an attractive and substantial service town and tourist destination in Tasmania’s NW region 295 km n-w of Hobart. Scenically located on the Leven River, it was settled in 1840s by timber cutters and the early settlement was known as The Leven. Potato growing and beef & dairy cattle breeding followed, which together with the railway (1890), secured the town’s future. Market held each Sat. Taste of Ulverstone (Jan), Twilight Rodeo (Feb). Goat Island Sanctuary (5 km west) walk to island (low tide only), cave and excellent fishing. Penguins (12 km east Leith). Preston Falls (19 km south) breathtaking vistas. Gunns Plains Caves (24 km s-w) hourly tours of underground river and glow worms. Leven Canyon (41 km south) picturesque walks, good recreational facilities & stunning views down the 250 m canyon. Winterbrook Falls (46 km south) stunning falls accessed by 5 hr return walk.
